Mad Science: Once you get to the abandoned Test Spheres in Shaft Nine and find the remains of 50s-era Aperture, it becomes obvious this was the case in Cave Johnson's era, as nearly everything in this section of the game is gloriously lifted from 40s-50s-era pulp sci-fi.
