Vertebrates and beasts are semantically related. In some cases you can use "Vertebrates" instead a noun "Beasts".

The original 3rd Edition rules for Dungeons & Dragons classified all prehistoric vertebrates as "beasts", not "animals", thus lumping them together with fantastical monsters such as the ankheg (a giant burrowing insect that spews acid) or the griffon.
