Bites and hints are semantically related. Sometimes you can use "Bites" instead a noun "Hints".

The bites indicate the position of decrypted letters relative encoded letters on a computer keyboard (so for example a bite on the left would mean "d" gets decoded to "f") but since the in-game hints never mention the bites, most players simply assumed they were just eye candy (no pun intended).
