Contend verb - To state (something) as a reason in support of or against something under consideration.
Usage example: contended that the senator's considerable experience made him the best candidate

Support and contend are semantically related. In some cases you can use "Support" instead a verb "Contend".

Support verb - To continue to declare to be true or proper despite opposition or objections.
Usage example: we support the students' right to speak out on local issues that affect them
