Contention noun - An idea or opinion that is put forth in a discussion or debate.
Usage example: my contention is that today's lower batting averages are the result of better pitching
Position is a synonym for contention in assertion topic. In some cases you can use "Position" instead a noun "Contention", when it comes to topics like opinion, claim, argument for idea.
