State noun - A body of people composed of one or more nationalities usually with its own territory and government.
Usage example: the British monarch is the head of state, while the prime minister is the head of the government

Season of the Witch, though being set in The High Middle Ages, there's no independent Slovene state yet, but instead the Duchy of Styria, which is part of modern-day southern Austria and northern Slovenia.
