In the Navy and Marines, Warrant Officers are often referred to as "Gunners" (though, technically, in the Marines, this is only supposed to apply to Infantry Weapons Officers).

Not being told why they were doing this, and having rather little faith in their commander's abilities, most of the Marines (notably the machine gunners) keep some ammo on them and end up shooting up the coolant equipment anyway as soon as the fighting starts.
