Now for some Fridge Logic: there are several problems pulling it off, but fiction only deals with the victim being injured instead of the shooter.
Source: Finger in a Barrel - Used on The Simpsons whenever someone gets injured and, rather than do the courageous thing and help the victim, the other characters run and leave him (or her) for dead.
Source: Let's Get Out of Here - As the victim is a main character, he's not killed, only injured, and his love interest does not consider him disposable, but is instead worried because of this trope.
