Sheriffs or county marshals almost always serve as the primary enforcement arm of the local courts, serving warrants, writs, evictions, and other court orders, and running the local jail system (in many places, these roles may be all that the sheriff is responsible for).

In 1944, both Field Marshals Gunther von Kluge and Erwin Rommel said to Manstein "I am (also) Prepared to serve under your orders" and Field Marshal Fedor von Bock said that Manstein was Germany's last hope (seven days before Germany surrendered).
