- Tabletop RPGs, especially ones with build-your-own-attack rules, will sometimes allow for attacks that can try again on the next turn (and possibly the one after that, and so on) if the initial to-hit roll misses.

Many house-rules attempts to add detailed critical hits and misses to pre-3E Dungeons & Dragons resulted in tables of injuries that made characters' bodies seem roughly as fragile as their character sheets.

In 2nd edition there were semi-official optional rules for critical hits and misses published by Dragon magazine, where you would roll a percent and in general, the higher the number the more potent the effect.
