US 550 was also part of the post-WWI plans for US Federal Highways, this section mostly follows the route of an 1880s toll road, and was completed years before construction of the Yungas Road (which was built with No Budget through even more difficult terrain (see above)) began.

Originally, I-94 operated over the western part of the Toll Road and the Chicago Skyway and switched to the Borman Expressway at Lake Station, while I-80 and I-90 operated over the Borman Expressway west of there (I-94's current route) and switched to the Toll Road at Lake Station.
