This last bit is particularly strange, as the series' Fantasy World Map appears to be somewhere in the vicinity of the American South and the upper part of Central America.

With regards to the state of Earth itself, the only part of it shown in the later series is the area in immediate vicinity of the original Macross itself, which does appear to be an arid desert even fifty years later.
